Close up of woman’s lipsSummer is here, which means plenty of time spent outdoors soaking up the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Unfortunately, it also means sunburns and chapped lips. You apply sunscreen to protect your skin from burns and harmful UV rays, but what about your lips? Here are a few tips to protect your smile during summer.

Apply an SPF Lip Balm to Prevent Cancer

Lip cancer can occur from excessive sun exposure. Although you can apply sunscreen to your lips, it’s not recommended by most product manufacturers. Instead, look for a moisturizing SPF lip balm.

Most sun-protecting lip balms are SPF 15 to SPF 30. According to the American Cancer Society, SPF 15 blocks 93% of UV rays, while SPF 30 filters 97%. No matter the SPF you choose, make sure your lips are protected by reapplying it as needed.

Drink Plenty of Water

Dehydration can lead to cracked or chapped lips. Healthcare professionals recommend drinking at least eight 8oz glasses of water daily. However, it’s important to drink more if you’re exercising or spending time in the heat. Staying hydrated will keep your lips, mouth, and body healthy, so you’ll feel your best while making the most of summer.

Treat Sunburned Lips with Ice Water

Chapped lips can be sore and painful. You can ease your discomfort by soaking a washcloth in ice water and gently holding it to your lips.

Apply Aloe Vera to Sore Lips

Aloe vera can also help soothe the burning sensation caused by too much sun. Apply it as needed to help the soft tissues recover.

Keep Your Lips Moisturized

Choose a good moisturizer to keep your lips hydrated. You’ll prevent cracking, so you won’t have to think twice before smiling. If your lips feel dry, avoid licking them because it can make the issue worse. Instead, reach for some chapstick or moisturizer.

Besides caring for your lips at home, don’t forget to schedule an appointment with your dentist for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll examine your teeth and gums to ensure they are healthy, but they will also look for signs of oral cancer, like sores or rough patches. If you notice any changes to your lip health in between your regular appointments, don’t wait to contact your dentist for an oral cancer screening. You can lessen your risk by giving your lips the attention they deserve during the warmer months.
