Dentures on a table

When you’ve been living with dentures for a while, it can start to feel like they’re just as much a part of you as any other part of your body. Not only do they become invaluable to the process of eating and drinking, they do a lot to improve your day-to-day confidence.

That’s why, if your prosthetic ever becomes damaged, it could easily send you into a little bit of a panic. You might wonder whether this is considered a dental emergency, one worth seeing your dentist about immediately. Here’s what you should know.

Are My Broken Dentures a Dental Emergency?

Without dentures, people with tooth loss are often in a really difficult situation. They’re typically unable to eat and talk easily, which makes the need for a replacement prosthetic incredibly pressing. This being the case, a broken denture falls well within the realm of a dental emergency. If yours has been damaged, it’s a good idea to contact your dentist as quickly as possible.

What Should I Do Until My Appointment?

Typically, your dentist will be happy to see you the same day that you give them a call regarding your broken prosthetic. However, if it’s after office hours you may need to wait a while.

If you have a backup set of dentures, you should plan to wear these until your appointment. If you don’t, you’ll have to try and get by without dentures in the meantime; you should never try and repair your dentures on your own, as this will likely make the eventual repairs more difficult.

How Can My Dentist Help Me?

When you do finally see your dentist, they will take the time to carefully examine your dentures in order to determine what kind of work will need to be done. In some situations it’ll be possible to repair your dentures within a single appointment, and you can expect to leave the dental office with your dental prosthetic feeling as good as new!

In other circumstances, it may be necessary to send your prosthetic off to a lab for more serious repairs. Your dentist will be able to tell you more about what your denture will need when you meet them.
